Working with the Strengths of African American Families
This workshop examines African American culture first through a historical, largely pejorative lens and invites participants to reexamine African American culture through a lens that views this culture as a source of strength for African Americans. We will explore the cultural differences between Euro- and African Americans and how African American cultural behavior patterns
are pathologized when measured against European American cultural standards and norms; these cultural behavior patterns, it will be shown, have functional or survival value within the African American culture.
